On the way home we stopped in Paris, because I was still too weak to travel far.I hid from other people, because I felt I was a murderer who had no right to be among them.“William, Justine and Henry all died by my hands,” I told my father, but he thought my illness had confused my mind.
Before we left Paris, a letter came from Elizabeth.“Dear Victor,” she wrote, “perhaps you love me only as a sister and are marrying me only because your parents wished it.”“If there is someone else, tell me honestly; I love you, and I want only your happiness.”
Her letter brought back the monster’s threat, and I thought about it for a long time.“If the monster plans to kill me on my wedding night,” I told myself, “let him try; one of us will die, and then the struggle will be over.”I wrote back to Elizabeth that I loved her with all my heart, and that I had a terrible secret which I would tell her the day after our wedding.
When we reached Geneva, Elizabeth ran to meet me, but she was thinner, and her eyes were sad.My father set the wedding for ten days later, and the whole house was busy with preparations.I smiled and tried to look happy, but I always carried pistols and a dagger, and I watched every shadow.
As the day came nearer, the monster did not appear, and I began to hope that the danger had passed. After the wedding, we crossed the lake by boat, planning to spend the night at Evian. It was a beautiful day; the sun was shining, and we could see the white top of Mont Blanc far away.
Elizabeth took my hand and said, “Why are you so sad, Victor? Look how beautiful everything is.”Those were the last happy moments of my life. The sun went down, the wind began to rise, and we landed at Evian as the evening grew dark.
