One evening, as the sun set and the moon rose from the sea, I sat in my workroom and began to think about what I was doing.Years before, I had created one monster; now I was making another, who might be ten thousand times more wicked. The new creature had made no promise; what if she refused to leave Europe, or hated her companion’s ugliness?

And if they had children, a race of monsters might one day fill the earth and make the whole human race afraid. Then I looked up and saw, by the light of the moon, the monster at the window, with a horrible smile on his lips.Yes, he had followed me all this way, and now he had come to see whether I had kept my promise.

Trembling with passion, I tore to pieces the thing on which I was working. The monster gave a howl of despair and revenge and disappeared into the night.A few hours later, I heard the door open, and he stood before me.

“You have destroyed the work you began,” he said in a terrible voice. “Do you dare to break your promise?”“I will never create another like you,” I answered firmly. “Leave me; I will not change my mind.”“Then be careful,” he said. “You are my creator, but I am your master. I shall be with you on your wedding night.”

Before I could catch him, he was gone, and soon I saw his boat moving swiftly across the dark water.Late that night I put the pieces of my unfinished work into a basket, rowed far out to sea, and threw them into the waves. Then I fell asleep in the boat, and when I woke, the wind had carried me far from the island.

After many hours on the rough sea, I reached a strange coast, where a crowd of people was waiting on the shore.“You will have to come with me to Mr. Kirwin, the judge,” one man told me coldly. “A gentleman was found dead here last night.”I did not yet know whose body it was, but a terrible fear began to rise in my heart.
